Shower Remodel Planning in a Small Slab Built Bathroom: Clearances, Drains and Venting

Most bathrooms in the older tract neighborhoods of Long Beach, Lakewood and the rest of the south county grid are the same room. Five feet by eight feet, one window, a tub on the short wall with the drain at the far end, a toilet in the middle and a vanity by the door. The house was built on a slab, the drain lines run in that slab, and the vent stack sits in the wall behind the toilet. Once you have seen a few of them you can guess the layout from the street.
That repetition is useful, because it means the decisions that blow up a budget are predictable, and almost all of them are decided before demolition rather than during it.
The one question that sets the price: does anything move
Anyone pricing bathroom remodeling lakewood ca work on a slab built house learns this fast. Fixtures are not expensive. Concrete is. A shower that stays exactly where the tub was, using the existing drain and the existing vent, is a straightforward job. The same shower moved four feet down the wall is a different project with a saw cut, a jackhammer, a trench, an inspection and a concrete patch in the middle of it.
So the first pass over any small bathroom plan is simple. Draw what you want. Then mark every fixture that has changed position from where it sits today, and be honest about whether the new spot is worth what it costs to get there.
Swaps are cheap, shuffles are not
A tub coming out and a shower going in on the same footprint keeps the drain, usually keeps the vent, and only touches the wall for the valve. A toilet and vanity trading places crosses two supply lines and two drains and turns into slab work. A vanity growing from thirty inches to forty eight often only needs the trap arm extended inside the wall cavity, which is trivial by comparison.
Clearances, which are not style preferences
Small bathroom layouts fail on dimensions, not on taste. A few of them are worth memorizing before you fall in love with a plan.
A toilet needs at least fifteen inches from the centerline of the bowl to any wall, tub or vanity on either side, so thirty inches of clear width total. Most inspectors want that measured to finished surfaces, not framing, which means tile thickness counts against you. In front of the toilet you need at least twenty one inches of clear floor, and thirty is far more comfortable if the door swings in.
A shower has to finish at thirty inches by thirty inches minimum. That is a legal minimum and it feels like a phone booth. Thirty six by thirty six is the smallest size most people will happily use every day, and if the old tub was sixty inches long you already have room for a shower far better than either.
Door swing eats floor area nobody accounts for. In a five by eight room, changing an inswing door to an outswing, or to a pocket door if the wall has room for one, can be the difference between a comfortable vanity and one you sidestep past.
Moving a drain in a slab, and how to avoid it
If the drain has to move, the sequence is fixed. Locate the existing line, ideally with a camera rather than a guess. Saw cut the slab in a channel wide enough to work in. Break out the concrete, dig the trench, cut into the existing line, and run new ABS or PVC at a quarter inch per foot of fall toward the connection. Tie in the vent. Pressure or fill test it. Get it inspected while it is still open, because a covered trench is a trench that gets reopened. Backfill with sand, then patch the concrete and let it cure before anything goes over it.
That is several days of work and a lot of dust in a house somebody is living in. It is often unavoidable and sometimes clearly worth it. But there are three ways around it worth checking first.
An offset toilet flange buys you an inch or two of movement in any direction without opening the floor, which is occasionally all a plan needs.
A linear drain along one wall gives the pan a single direction of fall instead of four, which lets the drain body sit somewhere the old center drain could not, sometimes right over the existing connection.
And a curbless entry, which people usually ask about for looks, is genuinely easier on a slab than on a raised floor, because the concrete can be recessed during the same pour rather than fighting joist depth.
Venting is the constraint nobody plans for
Drain lines fail inspection over venting more often than over slope. A trap needs a vent within a limited distance of its weir, and that distance depends on the pipe size, which is why a lavatory that vented fine at its original spot can fail after being moved a few feet down the same wall. Wet venting rules give you some flexibility, letting a lavatory drain serve as the vent for a nearby toilet in the right configuration, but the configuration is specific and it is not a judgement call.
The practical consequence for a homeowner is this. When a plan is drawn, the plumber has to look at the vent before the layout is treated as settled. A layout signed off without that check is a layout that gets revised on the day the inspector arrives, which is the most expensive day to revise anything.
The exhaust fan, which is doing more work than the tile
Every dollar spent on waterproofing gets undone by a room that stays damp. In a small bathroom the working rule is one cubic foot per minute of extraction for each square foot of floor, with a floor of fifty cubic feet per minute for any bathroom with a shower. That is a minimum rather than a target, and a slightly larger fan run on a timer beats a small one run manually.
The duct matters as much as the fan. Four inch smooth wall duct, as short and as straight as it can be run, terminating outside through the roof or a wall cap. Not into the attic, which is the single most common vent defect in older housing stock and the reason for a lot of attic mold. Insulate any run through unconditioned space, because uninsulated duct condenses inside and drips the water back down through the fan housing, which the homeowner then reports as a roof leak.
Put the fan on its own switch with a timer, or on a humidity sensor. A fan wired to the light switch runs only while somebody is in the room, and the room is still wet when they leave it.
Where the money actually goes
In a small bathroom, the tile is rarely the biggest line. Labor is. A five by eight room takes nearly the same number of trade visits as a room twice the size, so the fixed cost of getting a plumber, an electrician, a tile setter and an inspector through the door repeats regardless of area.
The items that reliably move a number are slab work, replacing a valve inside the wall, moving or adding electrical circuits, structural work at a window or a curbless entry, and any surprise found during demolition. Older houses in the area hide two common ones: galvanized supply lines still buried in a wall, which nobody should tile over, and a subfloor or bottom plate quietly rotted by twenty years of tub splash at the same corner.
Have your selections in hand before demolition
The fastest way to add a week to a small bathroom is to start without decisions made. Tile, trim, the shower valve, the fan, the vanity, the top, the faucet and the lighting all need to be chosen and ideally on site before the first wall opens, because the valve determines the rough in, the vanity determines the supply heights and the tile determines the substrate thickness.
A small bathroom has no staging area. The materials sit in the hallway or the garage, and the trades work in sequence with no slack between them. One missing valve trim kit can hold up the last three days of work.
Living without your only bathroom
A single bathroom house is a scheduling problem as much as a construction one. Ask, before signing anything, how many days the room is genuinely out of service, which days the water is off for the whole house, and whether the toilet can be reset temporarily overnight. A good answer to that question tells you as much about who you are hiring as any portfolio does.
